Additional Innovation Status Approved in District 49 Schools

With the Colorado Board of Education’s approval Aug. 8, Falcon School District 49 continues moving forward as a district of innovation.

District 49 received state-level approval with innovation plans for Evans International Elementary School and Remington Elementary School, both part of the Sand Creek Innovation Zone.

The schools’ plans lay out specific innovations and required state waivers to address student needs and educator support. Both plans provide for increased leadership at the building level, allowing more direct involvement in school staffing recommendations, curriculum and assessment.

Additionally, teachers at Evans International Elementary School will now be considered probationary, with their status subject to performance, not based on tenure. This aspect of the plan received buy-in from staff, an effort to create a collaborative environment for educational excellence.

“The state Board of Education approval of our innovation plans is exciting for our zone, as our plans show the commitment we have to our students, staff and community,” says Sean Dorsey, Sand Creek Zone innovation leader.

The Innovation Schools Act of 2008 provides a path for schools to design and implement innovative ideas and practices. Of the 178 Colorado school districts, District 49 was the fourth granted innovation status since the act was passed.

Hundreds of educators from District 49 had gathered for a back-to-school message from the leader in innovative education. Wagner has published numerous articles and books, including "Creating Innovators: The Making of Young People Who Will Change The World" and "The Global Achievement Gap: Why Even Our Best Schools Don’t Teach the New Survival Skills Our Children Need – and What We Can do About It."
